Sunday 18th August - walk ***** – Landguard circuit including a visit to the Fort with Arlo – cloudy start then sunny and hot.

This was the last day with Robert, Hannah and Grandson Arlo before they head for home we certainly make the most of our day, Arlo wakes and we have the usual banter in bed before I get up and make the usual pancakes, then an hour doing Hama beads before four of us head down to The Manor for a walk through the nature reserve before visiting Landguard Fort, Mag stays at home to do some cooking and gardening. The closest we could park was Squiz Lane so we had to walk a little further starting off along the beach as another large container ship heads in, an OOCL on its first visit to Felixstowe apperaentely! It was cloudy at this point with a light offshore breeze making the sea very flat. Arlo is full of energy and does everything flat out! We stop to skim flat stones before crossing the wooden walkway leading to the Fort, Robert and family have just joined English Heritage so got in free but they paid for me, I have been in before many years ago with my youngest Dan and it is a wonderful place to visit and you follow a one way route at ground level first with many of the room kitted out as they would have been in years past and the sun had now appeared making it pretty warm! There was loads of shell lefts, big guns trained out to sea and it showed how the fort was used over the years up to World war two and even the cold war! You end up on the first floor with great views over Felixstowe docks, We message each other with semaphore flags and spell our names with the Morse code machines, we even see a pigeon nesting with a youngster in an old fire bucket! We seem to walk for miles round and round with the staff being very friendly and helpful! Getting knackered now we slowly amble back over the hills and back to the beach and home for a well deserved lunch! Arlo makes another one of his board games which he plays with Mag, then Dan brings Maeva over for an hour to have a shoot off with Arlo, then after tea, yummy toad in the hole its time to say good bye, I think they enjoyed their week in lovely Suffolk!
